Make flashcards and take them to Anki

Type a card a line, or paste two columns from a spreadsheet. Check each card as you go, turn it over, then download a file Anki imports as it is.

A card a line: question :: answer, or two columns with a tab or a semicolon between them, as pasted from a spreadsheet.

Tap or click a card to turn it over.

In Anki, choose File › Import and pick the file: the deck and the fields are already set.

Write your cards in your notes

In Breef, any line written question :: answer is a card. It comes back for review with its note, and goes to Anki whenever you like.

How to use it

  1. Write one card a line: the question, two colons, the answer. For example: Capital of Peru :: Lima.
  2. Or paste two columns from Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers: the first becomes the question, the second the answer. A semicolon between them works too.
  3. Name your deck (Spanish::Verbs makes a subdeck), check the cards in the preview, and download the file.
  4. In Anki, choose File › Import and pick the file. The deck, the fields and a tag are already set.

Why flashcards work

Answering from memory (retrieval practice) strengthens what you know far more than reading it again. A flashcard is the simplest way to do it: a question on one side, and the answer only once you’ve tried.

Keep each card to one fact or idea, and ask it so it has one answer. Then let a spaced schedule decide when you see it again, as Anki and Breef both do.

Questions

Which formats can I paste?

A card a line, written question :: answer (the way Breef writes cards in a note), or two columns with a tab or a semicolon between them. Columns after the second are left out, and so are lines that aren’t cards; the preview says how many.

Which versions of Anki read the file?

Anki 2.1.54 and later read the file’s settings on their own, so there’s nothing to choose on import. In an older version, pick Tab as the separator, allow HTML in fields, and choose the deck yourself.

Can I use formatting or formulas?

Yes: **bold**, *italics* and `code` come through, and formulas between $ signs become ones Anki typesets.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The cards are made in your browser and the file is saved straight from it. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Do I need an account?

No. Breef, free to start too, lets you write cards inside your notes: any line written question :: answer comes back for review with its note, and goes to Anki whenever you like.
